Guide to cleaning camera equipment properly

The dark season is the perfect time to give your camera equipment a new lease of life. Well-maintained camera equipment improves its service life and reliability.

Cleaning the camera housing

The camera housing can be cleaned in various ways, starting with a simple blowing with a bellows or the Nitecore Blowerbaby. This makes it easy to remove all dust residues and the like, but what do you do with the grip leather and other rubber parts?

JJC CL-DF1BK Airblower with dust filter

The powerful airflow effortlessly removes dust and particles from camera sensors, Lens and other sensitive surfaces - without touching them. Thanks to the integrated dust filter, clean, particle-free air is guaranteed to prevent scratches or residues. The ergonomic design ensures easy handling and the high-quality workmanship makes it durable and reliable. Perfect for use at home and on the go - for flawless shots every time!

Lens-Aid set of 2 cleaning gels

The perfect solution for photographers to keep lenses and sensitive equipment free from dust and dirt. The special cleaning gel adapts perfectly to surfaces and removes even the smallest particles without leaving scratches. Ideal for the care of lenses, camera displays and filters, it ensures a clear view and flawless shots. To ensure that the gel retains its cleaning power, it must be stored in a cool place - perfect for photographers who expect the highest precision in equipment care. This gel gets very well into all recesses such as the grip leather and the grips on the Lens.

Here we recommend using a good deep cleaner from the vehicle care shop. With this and a microfiber cloth, you can restore a good black color to faded rubber and also work stubborn dirt out of the grip leather.

The correct procedure for cleaning the Body

  1. Blow off the camera to remove the light dust.
  2. Now clean the grip leather with the cleaning gel or the deep cleaner.
  3. Now clean the displays; you can use glass cleaner for this.
  4. You can clean the eyepiece very well using a cotton bud with cleaning fluid for lenses.
  5. now clean the mirror, if present, also using a cotton bud with the same cleaning fluid

Cleaning the camera sensor

A topic that makes many photographers tremble with respect. You can clean your sensor in various ways, with a distinction being made between the wet cleaning method and the dry method via stamping. There are two things to bear in mind when using wet cleaning sticks: The size should be suitable for the sensor and that only a small amount of pressure is used during cleaning to prevent streaking. It is also advisable to use the swap only once on each side so that collected dirt is not reapplied to the sensor.

The right steps for sensor cleaning

  1. Hold the camera upside down and blow off the sensor and the interior so that the loosened dust does not stick to the sensor but falls down.
  2. Now clean the sensor with the stamp set or a wet cleaning stick
  3. Check the sensor again with sufficient light from different angles to see if it is clean again.
  4. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3.

Cleaning lenses

Lenses can get dirty in various places, namely on the glass, behind the glass or on the rubbers. If the Lens is dirty on the Body, you can clean this as well as the camera body with a deep cleaner and refurbish the rubbers on the Lens. You just have to make sure that the cleaner does not get onto the glass, which is why it is best to apply the cleaner to a microfiber cloth and clean the rubbers.

You should not clean glass elements with your T-shirt, sweater or a cloth, as this can not only leave scratches, but also simply leave lint behind. You can prevent this by using a very fine microfiber cloth that does not lint. A good alternative here are lenspens, which usually combine several practical tools for cleaning camera equipment, such as a brush.

It reliably removes dust, fingerprints and dirt without damaging delicate surfaces. Thanks to its compact packaging, it is ideal for use at home or on the go - an indispensable accessory for clean equipment and perfect shots!

Stains from water or other liquids that cannot be removed with the microfiber cloth, to remove these residues you should resort to wet cleaning, this liquid must not be too aggressive, otherwise it could damage the coating of the Lens.

How does the dirt get there?

There are many ways in which dirt can accumulate on or in your camera, which we will try to explain to you once again. Rubbers get dirty through use, sweat on your hands settles in the patterns of the rubber and dries there. Weather conditions can also lead to dirt getting into your camera or being deposited on it.

Adverse weather conditions can also cause your camera equipment to become dirty. There are exciting stories from various events, such as Burning Man, a desert festival in America, where very fine dust creeps into the camera.

The sensor usually gets dirty when changing lenses, dust usually falls onto the sensor when the lens is removed. It is best to hold the camera upside down so that the sensor is facing the ground, then the dust on the bayonet of the Lens can fall down and does not fall into the shaft of the full-frame sensor. Also try to prevent your sensor from having prolonged contact with the air, as this is more likely to collect dust.

Photography with color filter

Working with blocking filters had its heyday in the purely analog era. Due to the wide dynamic range of digital sensors and, above all, the possibilities of image processing, the topic has been somewhat forgotten. But in times when AI & Co. are becoming more and more popular, many photographers are going back to basics. These color filters serve the purpose of blocking certain colors from an image, because not every colored light can enter through a filter. These filters are available in a wide variety of colors, the following are common: Green, red, orange, yellow and blue.
