The history of the Olympus / OM System brand

The brand history of Olympus is marked by a long tradition in the optical and medical industry. The company's origins date back to 1919, when Takeshi Yamashita founded the "Takachiho Seisakusho" in Tokyo. Initially, the company manufactured microscopes and thermometers before focusing on the production of cameras and photographic products.

In the following decades, Olympus established itself as a renowned manufacturer of photographic equipment and made a name for itself with innovative technologies and products. Most notable was the introduction of the Olympus PEN in 1959, a semi-automatic camera that was compact and lightweight. This camera shaped the way for later compact system cameras.

Another milestone was the introduction of the Olympus OM System in 1972, a series of high-quality SLR cameras known as the Olympus OM-1 and OM-2, which were popular for their compact design and high performance. The "OM" stood for "Olympus Maitani," named after engineer Yoshihisa Maitani, who was instrumental in the development of the system.

Over the years, Olympus expanded its product portfolio to include various fields, including medical devices such as endoscopes and microscopes. This diversification helped the company generate stable revenue, especially during times when the photography market was undergoing changes.

How OM System came to be

In the wake of technological developments and changes in the camera market, Olympus made a significant change. In 2020, the company announced that it would sell its imaging division. This decision resulted in Olympus' imaging division being transferred to a company called Japan Industrial Partners (JIP). As part of this transaction, the "Olympus" brand name was also relinquished after a transition period.

Subsequently, the camera and imaging division continued to operate under the name "OM Digital Solutions Corporation." The name "OM" was retained to commemorate the historical significance of the Olympus OM System and to provide a link to the company's history.

Overall, Olympus has a rich brand history marked by technological innovation and a wide range of products. The decision to change the brand name in connection with the imaging division reflects the changes and challenges facing the camera industry.
