Test report of the Canon RF 35mm F1.4
Reading time: 6 minutes - June 05, 2024 - by Markus Igel

Hands On: Canon RF 35mm f1.4 L VCM

We are always delighted when we receive mail from Canon, and this time we were able to get our hands on the Canon RF 35mm.

External features of the Canon RF 35mm f1.4 L VCM

The first thing that catches the eye is the familiar Canon red ring at the top of the lens! What distinguishes the lens as a high-quality Lens of the L-Line is reflected in the workmanship and the glass used.

The new aperture ring

A new feature is the aperture ring, which enables manual control of the aperture without the click function familiar from Sigma or Sony. Another limitation is the use of the ring, which can only be used in video mode. This makes it rather uninteresting for photographers.

Button and control ring

Another feature of the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM is a freely assignable function button and an equally freely assignable control ring. This means that the front ring can also be used as an ISO control ring, for example.

Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM

  • L Fixed focal length Lens
  • for full-frame and APS-C E-mount cameras
  • high speed: F1.4
  • especially for full-frame photos and videos
  • VCM motor - ideal for photo and video recordings
  • circular aperture with 11 blades achieves beautiful bokeh

Autofocus & Focus Breathing

The autofocus of the 35mm L-Line lens has been improved by combining the Nano USM with the even faster VCM technology for a very precise and fast autofocus, which accurately focuses on the Lens and makes the Focus Breathing almost invisible. Which is why this lens may be an interesting lens for Canon videographers in particular. What does VCM stand for? This term stands for Voice Coil Motor, which works by magnetism.

Optical quality

What can you say about an Lens? The image quality is very good and produces a creamy bokeh thanks to the 11 aperture blades. With the open aperture of F1.4, images in difficult lighting situations also offer very good and pleasant contrasts and colors.

New EL-10 clip-on flash

In addition to the Lens, a new clip-on flash has also been introduced, which offers some interesting functions, which we would like to talk about briefly.

Canon Speedlight EL-10

  • Short charging time of 1.5 seconds

  • 21 pin multifunctional shoe

  • Minimum power of 1/1024

  • Guide number 40, up to 20 meters range

Conclusion

New glass at last! Canon RF photographers have been waiting a long time for new Lens in the RF system. That's why we're very happy to finally see something open aperture with a good performance from Canon and we'd like to see more of them!
