Capture One iPad App - Finally a good photo editing app on the iPad?

After a long wait, the time has finally come - Capture One Pro is a common photo editing software for many photographers. But how do you easily edit images on the go? Quite simply! Thanks to the Capture One version for the iPad, you are no longer tied to a PC. Upload your picture, insert it and give free rein to your creations. That's it! Find out more now in our video or text.

Capture One Pro Ipad Version

Although Apple's iPad models are becoming increasingly powerful, they have not yet been able to replace a computer in certain functions. in 2019, the time had finally come. Thanks to the new iPadOS operating system, many useful functions were added, such as clear file management and a port that makes it possible to connect various devices to the iPad using USB-C. The Danes have taken their time with Capture One, but now the time has finally come. Capture One is mobile!
You can download it for free from the App Store and test it for 7 days free of charge. After that it costs €5.49 on a monthly subscription model.

Importing images into the app

When you start the Capture One app, the file management opens. This is where you select how you want to upload a file. Images can be imported using the USB-C port, an SD card, external hard disk or directly from the camera. It is also possible to use images from the Apple photo gallery or the Files app. What we are still missing, however, is tethering directly to the iPad. This function is still under development and will soon be available in a new update and will certainly be a great alternative for all professionals who will be able to use a lightweight iPad instead of a large laptop when they are on the move. After importing, various albums can be created on the left-hand side for organization. If you have uploaded several pictures, the "Filter and sort" function is definitely helpful to get a better overview.

Image editing

If you now want to start a project and thus edit an image, we now have a different interface than we are familiar with from other image editing apps for the iPad. Capture One has come up with a completely new operating concept compared to the others, with the tool on the left and a slider wheel on the right. You can also change the selection of tools for the respective side at any time. This function makes it possible to edit an image with just one hand, as you can swap a tool by holding it down for a long time.

It is advantageous to work with an Apple Pencil, as this brings with it additional functions, such as the function that allows you to quickly go back one step, which is triggered by double-tapping on the pencil. The app has not yet been fed with all functions, such as editing with different layers or tone curves and color balances. However, Capture One has announced that such essential functions will be added. What makes Capture One special, however, is the color management.

In the app, the processing is the same as in Capture One Pro, which offers a huge advantage over other image editing tools. Colors are interpreted and rendered more realistically and accurately, which makes a visible difference, especially with skin tones.

Of course, it is possible to export the project afterwards. You can rename the images, specify the desired file format and select the resolution and quality. It is even possible to add a watermark.

Easy operation

The Capture One app is easy to use with your fingers, which means you don't need a keyboard or an Apple Pencil. Simply put, the motto is "Start on the go and finish at home", which is made possible by the user-friendly functions. However, if you want to finish the project on your computer, that's no problem either, as everything synchronizes quickly thanks to the Capture One Cloud, but more on that in the next paragraph.

Cloud ecosystem

Capture One has of course come up with a cloud solution, but it's not quite what you would have expected. When you edit something on the go, it's added to the cloud using the three dots next to the album. If you then press "Cloud transfer" on your computer at home, the project is also available on the computer in the Capture One Pro program.

This is therefore not a real-time transfer of the editing of an image that is in the cloud, but the cloud only serves as a transfer option. Currently, sharing projects via the cloud is only a one-way solution, i.e. you cannot transfer documents from the Capture One Pro version to the iPad via the cloud.

Conclusion

In summary, Capture One's iPad app is a welcome addition to the long-standing Capture One Pro version and also offers many of the professional tools for image editing. Some essential tools are still missing, but according to Capture One these will be added to the iPad app with the next updates
