The new 50 mm Lens sets new standards in terms of compactness and performance. Based on innovative technologies, the APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH. leaves nothing to be desired. Brilliance, micro-contrast right into the last corners and a balanced bokeh make the lens a true Leica classic.
Leica APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH.:
Versatile standard focal length
Leica Camera AG is expanding the Summicron-SL line with another high-performance Lens:
the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH.. Whether for reportage, travel, studio, architecture, landscape, portrait, close-up or documentary photography - the focal length of the new SL lens makes it extremely versatile and suitable for use in almost any situation. Like the other Summicron-SL Lens, the APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH. sets standards and qualifies as the new reference among standard focal lengths. The L-Mount standard used also makes the APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH. fully compatible with cameras from other L-Mount Alliance partners that also have the lens mount developed by Leica Camera.
Twelve highly complex lenses - three of them with aspherical surfaces - in ten groups contribute to maximum image quality, even when the aperture is fully open - because the following applies to Leica lenses: open aperture equals working aperture. Stopping down is therefore purely a stylistic device for image composition and not necessary for an increase in performance. Natural skin tones, smooth transitions into bokeh, outstanding detail contrast and sharpness right to the edges of distortion-free images are further quality characteristics of Leica Camera lenses and also apply to the APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH.
Every imaging element made of glass - such as lenses - refracts the light of different colors to different degrees. As a result, not all the light rays of a multi-colored object focus on one pixel - the result is chromatic aberration. These chromatic aberrations have been apochromatically corrected in the new APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH. Most of the lens elements used have anomalous partial dispersion and are made of high-quality special glass whose sophisticated processing pushes even the innovative production methods of the Leica manufactory to the limits of what is possible.
Extremely powerful and robust stepper motors with DSD (Dual Syncro Drive) are used for the autofocus in all Summicron-SL lenses. With these, the entire focusing range can be covered in only around 250 milliseconds. In addition to autofocus, Leica Camera is also taking an innovative approach to manual focusing: Summicron-SL Lens use a new type of manual focus ring design. A ring magnet with alternating north-south polarization is embedded in the ring. If the ring is rotated, the magnetic field changes. A sensor evaluates the magnetic field and sends its measurement signals to the main processor. Depending on the angle of rotation and the speed of rotation, the focus position is approached accordingly - manual focusing can thus be performed even faster and more precisely.
Both the construction and design of the ultra-modern Summicron SL line represent the next step in lens development for the Leica SL system. New, extremely precise manufacturing methods and measuring techniques were developed specifically for production. The result is not only more compact dimensions and a significantly lower weight, but also excellent imaging performance. A particular focus in the design of the APO-Summicron-SL fixed focal lengths is on avoiding stray light and reflections. In addition to optimizing the optical and mechanical design, unavoidable reflections are reduced to the lowest possible level by a high-quality coating of the optical surfaces. The lenses can also be used in almost any weather without hesitation, thanks to the dust and splash water protection and the Aquadura coating of the outer lens elements.
APO
Apochromatic and more
"APO" identifies the Leica lenses with the best imaging performance. In the SL system, all SL-Summicron Lens, from telephoto to wide-angle, have this coveted addition. For a long time, this designation was reserved for telephoto lenses, as only these could achieve the required quality.
Leica launched the first APO lens on the market more than 40 years ago, in 1975, with the APO-TELYT-R 1:3.4/180 mm. In 2012, the APO-Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm ASPH. was the first normal focal length to receive this award.
Thanks to technological progress, complex designs and new manufacturing methods in the SL system, the developers were able to perfectly maximize the optical performance.
At Leica, however, we understand the APO designation to mean not only the correction of the longitudinal chromatic aberration, for which the purely scientific definition of the term "apochromatic" stands. Rather, all other chromatic and monochromatic image errors must also be optimized to a similar degree. A performance that is proven by the corresponding MTF graphs and practically reaches the physically possible diffraction limits. Over the long period since the introduction of the first APO lens, the associated quality standards have continuously increased, as today's APO lenses are future-proof and will also impress in combination with image sensors of the highest resolution.
